|
Since 1998 perennial coalescent of 5 members. Melodies, harmonies, and instrumentation blossoming from mid-autumn through early fall. Common throughout the upper mid-west from upper Michigan to Minnesota primarily in northern Wisconsin and south to Florida. Often found in disturbed soils near bluegrass or road-side ditches and taverns. Styles including but not limited to; bluegrass, neo-acoustic-electric-old-time, americana (whatever the hell that is), country, and, of course, jug-band. Members primarily hirsute. Instrument distribution orbicular and frequently changing on stage over the course of the evening. Showy clusters of original songs warranting the creation of the separate species; Daryljethro slopgrassicus (known commonly as Slopgrass, Slop, or Sloppy Joe). Used medicinally as a euphoric, purgative, and treatment for chorophobia. |

We are extremely thrilled to present Michael Hurley and Dave Reisch at this year's Jackpine Jamboree!! Michael Hurley is a singer/songwriter of the finest caliber. Writing and recording music since the early sixties, Michael Hurley's "First Songs" was recorded when he was only 22 years old on Folkways album #3581. Now with over 17 much loved and widely acclaimed albums under his belt, Hurley (Snockman, Doc Snock, Hi Fi Snock, Elwood Snock, or simply The Snock, as he refers to himself on some occasions) has made an indelible mark in American Folk Music. Those 'in the know' call him "one of the greatest ramblin' folk troubadours of all time". With his eccentric perspectives, Snock brings his music to life through guitar, fiddle, banjo and even the mock trumpet. He is a painter, cartoonist, storyteller and all around artist. His deep well of material continues to strongly flow into the 4th decade of his career. Snock's old friend, Dave Reisch will be accompanying on the bass. He is a long time member of the Holy Modal Rounders, and has also played with Jeffery Frederick and the Clamtones. Dave is also a founding member of the Unholy Modal Rounders who, along with Michael Hurley and the Clamtones, released the album 'Have Moicy' in 1975 which Rolling Stones called 'one of the greatest albums of the seventies'. When he is not touring with Michael Hurley, backing the Holy Modal Rounders, or on some other project, Dave Reisch sings and plays bass with Portland, Oregon's wildly popular cult band, the Freak Mountain Ramblers . We look forward to taking a musical journey with Snock, Kornbred, Rousch through the land that only Snock hisself can dream of.

Piper Road Spring Band was born into the age of rock & roll with individual backgrounds diverse as classical, cowboy, folk, blues and Dixieland. Influenced by some live performances of Doc Watson and Bill Monroe and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band release of "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" in the early 1970's, they put away the electric amps and guitars and developed a unique acoustic/bluegrass style. They never completely abandoned their musical roots and have blended Irish fiddle tunes with American country, big band, novelty and space-aged Grateful Dead inspired jams. The band continues to swing! With their strong bond of friendship, commitment to quality musicianship and continuing support of a strong fan base, Piper Road Spring Band invites you to join them as their show hits the road. |

The Yankee Coalition The Jackpine is your only chance to see the boys play as they once did back in the days of The Great Northern Bluegrass Festival (Mole Lake, WI). Tuck Pence is a well renowned musician in his own right, but when backed by Danny Lincoln -banjo wizard and pedal steel extraordinaire, Joe Kronick -alias "mandolin man", the uncle of Bluegrass- G.T. "Doghouse" Hauser, and Donny Lincoln it is a show not to be missed! |

The Wisconsin state motto is simple - “Forward.” Milwaukee’s own .357 String Band epitomizes this spirit. Established in 2004, they have brought their inimitably relentless style of Americana from the West Coast of the United States to as far east as Serbia, playing over 500 shows in 10 different countries, and honing their razor sharp sound and adrenaline-fueled live show with a grueling tour schedule. Anything but derivative, The .357 String Band pays homage to both the dark roots of Americana - the fatalistic murder ballads, sneering Outlaw Country and unforgiving Gospel - as well as their own background coming of age in Milwaukee’s Punk and Rockabilly scenes. The result is a faster, meaner folk music - something the band calls “Streetgrass.”

Put Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, St.

ice. Pour into the broken vessels of humanity (salt on rim to taste).

A perennial Jackpine favorite, Colin's music is reminiscent of the late great John Hartford, with his solo show featuring his dazzling dancing foot percussion. Indeed the wonderful rhythms of his feet have soul! While dancing, Colin sings and plays the daylights out of his fiddle, banjo and guitar. His live shows leave audiences spellbound with the impression that they're listening to an entire band. He has just released “Dancing by the River” which captures his enormous instrumental range and songwriting in full swing. Colin tours throughout the U.S.A. and has recently authored the book Play Banjo Today! |

Nate Sitzman & Cochran Auto Body A talented multi-instrumentalist, Nate weaves his intricate melodies and lyrical stylings into "artwork for your ears", carving out a genre all his own. A favorite act at last year's Jackpine, we are excited to have Nate & Cochran Auto Body back for what is sure to be another great performance! All hail Snock...reet reet! |

Deep-Fried Grass is good time bluegrass at it's finest- high energy, dynamic, inviting, intense, feel-good music. Based out of Beautiful Door County, DFG has very quickly become known as one of the top bluegrass bands in Wisconsin. Ryan Thompson played and recorded music with Bill Jorgenson "the Father of Wisconsin Bluegrass" for over 6 years, until his passing in early 2007. A high energy delivery of just about all corners of the bluegrass genre; traditional bluegrass, rock influenced "newgrass", self-coined honky-grass (honkytonk/countrygrass),and dead-head grass influenced by the likes of Jerry Garcia, makes this a must see band. |

The Hobo Nephews of Uncle Frank Brothers Teague and Ian Alexy’s first two albums placed them firmly among the pioneers of the impressive roots music resurgence going on in Minnesota. Both well-respected singer/songwriters, Teague is practically a one man band stomping his feet, banging out rhythm guitar and blowing soulful blues on the harmonica around his neck while Ian is a foot stomping guitar ace on both melodic acoustic and rowdy, rock n’ roll electric. The Hobo Nephews is a road hardened trio of drummer Paul Grill and the brother songwriting team of Ian and Teague Alexy, who eloquently trace the emotional ups and downs of life on the road over a roller coaster of dirty roadhouse stomps, visceral ballads, rock n' roll burners, country-blues shuffles and most things in between. Most bands lack a strong singer/songwriter with originality or true grit. Hobo Nephews is the rare group that can boast having two songwriters of style and substance.
